Prime Minister Gordon Brown said Monday that UN climate talks in Copenhagen were “held to ransom” by a small group of countries, in comments released by his Downing Street office.

In a podcast due to be issued later Monday, Brown welcomed the fact that a deal was done to help combat global warming but warned lessons must be learned from the way the negotiations were carried out.

“Never again should we face the deadlock that threatened to pull down those talks. Never again should we let a global deal to move towards a greener future be held to ransom by only a handful of countries,” he said.

Brown did not mention specific countries, although Climate Change Secretary Ed Miliband had earlier pointed the finger at China, saying it had “hijacked” the summit by blocking a legally binding treaty.

The British government was aware of “drumbeats in Washington” in early 2001 calling for the toppling of Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein but steered clear of such an aggressive policy before the Sept. 11 attacks, officials said Tuesday as a panel launched a major inquiry on how and why the British government went to war in Iraq.

William Patey, head of the Foreign Office’s Middle East department at the time, said during the hearing that in February 2001, “We were aware of these drumbeats in Washington and internally we discussed it. Our policy was to stay away from that.

“We didn’t think that Saddam [Hussein] was a good thing and it would be great if he went,” he said, “but we didn’t have a policy for getting rid of him.”

A five-year-old girl suffering from swine flu died after doctors took two weeks to diagnose her illness, it was claimed last night.

Nida Qureshi was seen by three GPs and a hospital doctor who told her parents she may have tonsillitis.

By the time doctors discovered that she had the H1N1 virus, the youngster was on a life support machine, her family said. She died eight days later.

Last night relatives said Nida’s parents - Zubair, 28, and Raheela, 30, who is pregnant with their second child - believe that their daughter may have survived if swine flu had been detected earlier.

Nida’s uncle, Jawaid Qureshi, said: ‘Her mum, herself a child carer, and dad are very angry that doctors and GPs failed to diagnose it earlier. It’s devastating. She may have lived if it had been diagnosed earlier.’

Mr Qureshi said Nida - a ‘bright’ girl without any underlying health problems - fell ill with a temperature and vomiting on October 19.

Europe is facing a population crisis because of attacks on religion by secular writers, Britain’s chief rabbi has said.

Lord Sacks blamed Europe’s falling birth rate on a culture of “consumerism and instant gratification”.

He said the continent was “dying” and accused its citizens of not being prepared for parenthood’s “sacrifices”.

He made his comments in a lecture for Christian think tank Theos in central London on Wednesday.

The 61-year-old, who took his seat in the Lords last week, said: “Wherever you turn today - Jewish, Christian or Muslim - the more religious the community, the larger on average are their families.

Colonel Gaddafi accused the international community of “double standards” because Israel is allowed to maintain a barely-hidden nuclear capability while Iran comes under massive pressure not to develop its own.

The border crossing by 34 Kurds from Iraq to Turkey on Monday might not seem much of an event, in a region plagued for decades by a conflict which has cost tens of thousands of lives.

But it was an important symbolic gesture, which might yet give vital momentum to an as-yet undetailed government peace initiative launched in August.

All day on Monday, Turkish news channels broadcast reports and pictures from the dusty border crossing at Habur. There was not much to see. Just a few dozen police with anti-riot equipment, and the white border-control building in the distance.

The scene on the other side of the border post, though, was much livelier. A group of men - some in military fatigues - women and children were being cheered and clapped as they pushed through a crowd of well-wishers, escorted by Turkish police.

A set of dinosaur footprints uncovered in eastern France and dating from 150 million years ago has been authenticated by scientists as a unique discovery.

The well-preserved footprints, between 1.5 and two meters in diameter, were discovered in Plagne in the French Jura by a team from Claude Bernard university in Lyon, eastern France.

“It’s an exceptional discovery and unique in the world by virtue of the size of the prints, as well as by the length of the trail,” Pierre Hantzpergue, geology professor at Lyon university, told Reuters on Tuesday.
